ANKARA, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said he would have a phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Monday to discuss peace efforts in Ukraine, adding that he would also ask him to restart a deal for the safe passage of grains via the Black Sea. NATO member Turkey has maintained cordial ties with both Kyiv and Moscow during the war, providing military help to Ukraine but refusing to join Western sanctions on Moscow. It has hosted three rounds of peace talks between the warring parties in Istanbul and offered to host a leaders' meeting. Sign up here. Speaking at a press conference on Sunday after a G20 summit in South Africa, Erdogan said the 2022 Black Sea grain deal, brokered by Turkey and the United Nations, aimed to pave the path for a peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine. "We were able to succeed in this up to a certain point and it did not continue after. Now, during the discussions we will have tomorrow, I will again ask Mr. Putin about this. I think it would be very beneficial if we can start this process," he said. He added that he would also discuss how to "end the deaths" during the call, and that he would share with European and U.S. leaders and allies the outcomes of his conversation with Putin. Erdogan did not comment directly on Washington's 28-point draft plan to end the war. Kyiv and European allies have voiced alarm over what they see as major concessions to the aggressor Russia, as officials meet in Geneva to discuss it. The Black Sea Grain Initiative was inked in July 2022 to allow the safe export of nearly 33 million metric tons of Ukrainian grain via the Black Sea, despite the war. Russia withdrew from the agreement in 2023, complaining that its own food and fertiliser exports faced serious obstacles. It has also complained of restrictions on payments, logistics and insurance as a barrier to shipments. Last week, Erdogan hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Ankara, and on Sunday discussed the war in Ukraine with the leaders of France and Italy, according to his office. He called for all diplomatic efforts to be utilised to reach a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine, saying the resumption of talks in Istanbul could help this effort. https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/turkeys-erdogan-says-he-will-speak-russias-putin-monday-2025-11-23/

FT quotes interview with EXIM chair John Jovanovic First tranche of deals will include projects in Egypt, Pakistan and Europe Nov 23 (Reuters) - The U.S. Export-Import Bank (EXIM) will invest $100 billion to secure U.S. and allied supply chains for critical minerals, nuclear energy and liquefied natural gas, the organisation's chair John Jovanovic told the Financial Times in an interview published on Sunday. The first tranche of deals will include projects in Egypt, Pakistan and Europe, Jovanovic told the newspaper, adding that the West was over-reliant on supplies of these critical materials that "are no longer fair". Sign up here. "We can't do anything else that we're trying to do without these underlying critical raw material supply chains being secure, stable and functioning," he was quoted saying. CONGRESS HAD APPROVED $135 BLN FOR EXIM TO DEPLOY Jovanovic told the FT that the bank's early deals would include a credit insurance guarantee for $4 billion of natural gas being delivered to Egypt by New York-based commodities group Hartree Partners, and a $1.25 billion loan for the Reko Diq mine being developed by Barrick Mining (ABX.TO) , opens new tab in Pakistan. The bank has $100 billion left to deploy of the $135 billion authorized by Congress, he said. EXIM did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours. The investment aligns with U.S. President Donald Trump's energy-dominance agenda. Trump had campaigned on a promise to increase U.S. energy output and has sought to roll back energy and environmental regulations since taking office in January. https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/us-exim-invest-100-billion-secure-critical-mineral-supplies-ft-says-2025-11-23/

Nov 23 (Reuters) - BHP Group (BHP.AX) , opens new tab said on Monday it is no longer pursuing a potential combination with Anglo American (AAL.L) , opens new tab after preliminary discussions with the rival miner's board. BHP had made a renewed takeover bid for Anglo American, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Sunday, just months after the London-listed company announced merger plans with Canada's Teck Resources (TECKb.TO) , opens new tab to create a global copper-focused heavyweight. Sign up here. Anglo American declined to comment on Sunday. Anglo American's market capitalisation is about $41.80 billion, while BHP's is around $132.18 billion, based on LSEG data. In September, Anglo American revealed plans to merge with Teck in an all-share transaction, marking the sector's second-biggest M&A deal ever. In May 2024, BHP scrapped a $49 billion bid for Anglo that would have boosted the Australian miner's holdings of copper, the metal seen as essential for the transition to greener energy. If the BHP/Anglo deal had gone ahead, the combined entity would have been the world's largest copper producer, with a total annual production of around 1.9 million metric tons. The new Anglo Teck group is expected to have a combined annual copper production capacity of about 1.2 million tons, still second to BHP. https://www.reuters.com/business/bhp-has-made-renewed-bid-approach-anglo-american-bloomberg-news-reports-2025-11-23/

Ukraine strikes Moscow region power station Fire sparked, heating cut off for residents Backup power and heating units being deployed Video shows massive balls of fire - Russian media MOSCOW, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Ukraine struck a heat and power station in the Moscow region on Sunday with drones, triggering a major fire and cutting off heating for thousands in one of Kyiv's biggest attacks to date on a power station deep inside Russia. In the fourth year of the deadliest European conflict since World War Two, Russia has been pummelling Ukraine's electricity and heat infrastructure while Kyiv has up until now mostly focused on trying to knock out Russia's oil refineries, crude terminals and pipelines. Sign up here. But early on Sunday, Ukrainian drones struck the Shatura Power Station, about 120 km (75 miles) east of the Kremlin, Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobyov said. Video footage on Telegram showed balls of flames and black smoke rising into the night sky from the power station. Reuters was able to confirm the location, though not the date of the video. "Some of the drones were destroyed by air-defence forces. Several fell on the territory of the station. A fire broke out at the facility," Vorobyov said. Vorobyov said that backup power had been switched on and that mobile heating systems were being deployed to the area where the temperature was around freezing point. "All efforts are being taken to promptly restore heat supply," Vorobyov said. The town of Shatura has a population of about 33,000. One local resident said that there was no heating. Three transformers at the power station caught fire, the Kommersant newspaper cited the emergencies ministry as saying. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. In recent weeks and months, there have been repeated power and heat outages in parts of Ukraine due to Russian attacks. Ukraine has tried to undermine Russia's war economy by targeting its oil revenues. Ukraine has also hit some power and heating installations in Ukrainian regions controlled by Russian forces and in Russian regions neighbouring Ukraine, but has thus far not inflicted major damage on electricity and heat stations serving Moscow and the surrounding region, which has a population of more than 22 million. Russia's defence ministry said on Sunday it had downed 75 Ukrainian drones, including 36 over the Black Sea and several over the Moscow region. Russia's Vnukovo airport halted flights on Sunday for about an hour before restoring them. The Shatura power station, one of Russia's oldest, was founded under Vladimir Lenin after the Bolshevik revolution, and used to run on peat. It now uses mostly natural gas. https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukraine-strikes-russian-power-heat-station-moscow-region-russian-official-says-2025-11-23/
